There are many, many different aspects to driving and racing. What about your own driving are you fond of? Car control, ability to sense the present grip/traction levels, judging how to get through traffic or the next driver ahead of you?
Perhaps you're good at threshold braking or putting power down, driving the perfect line, adapting to a misbehaving race-car or many other things.
I'll say I am good at driving to just beyond the limit of adhesion of the tires, but not normally very well under the limit. I am almost always driving with major slip angle. Whether this is always fast or not is another question. I am not so good at running the perfect line, and my vision does get caught being too close to the front of the car. I feel I am good at knowing when to give up speed in a corner for getting a crucial run down a straightaway to pass someone who could otherwise hold me up for a great deal longer. I am not very consistent on long runs.

ReplyDeleteI'm constantly hearing from mutual friends that you drive with too much slip angle. I am glad you've isolated that trait. I am sure its a matter of figuring out where and when it is beneficial to be slightly under the limit and when it is better to be over.
ReplyDeleteI think my shortcoming is car control and learning on the fly. I don't do too bad on road courses but I can't autocross for the life of me. I just don't learn the course fast enough. By the time I've figured out the course enough that I feel I can be within competitive time, its my last run already.
As far as car control goes, I have trouble staying on the absolute limit. Basically, your strongest point is my weakest. I am not that comfortable being right on the edge; There are several sections at my home track that being under control in major slip angle would be beneficial, but I haven't been able to push it hard enough.
I think my strong point is that I can concentrate very well and I have good physical endurance. At the track constantly doing 1 hour + sessions. It helps that I have a reliable car. Consistency isn't quite there yet but I am pretty good thinking out what I need to do to improve.
Wish you were closer and we could do the GRRC together.
Yes some say I drive with too much slip angle, but I maintain that I am not loosing any momentum. They are not in the car and cannot feel what I feel.
ReplyDeleteYou should check that over with a data logger
